Certified Dog Training Coach & Technician Gillian Cooke

The Process

Training Versus Behaviour?

Training is suitable for building new behaviours such as practicing loose lead skills, muzzle training, relaxation protocols, building engagement or technical skills such as recall, whistle recall.

Training sessions are not suitable for dogs displaying anxiety, aggression, maladaptive behaviours, stereotypic behaviours, attachment/separation, guarding, hyper arousal or new behaviours of concern. These require the services of a Behaviour Consultant.

A Trainer builds skills and a Behaviour Consultant works to modify existing, undesirable or problematic behaviours.

Whilst a trainer has an understanding of behaviour and a behaviour consultant has training technical skills, the roles each play in helping you and your dog are vastly unique.

Please get in touch if you are unsure of which service you require

Our training coach will visit your home and assess your dogs training requirements. This can be up to 2 hours in length.

Guidance & demonstrative training will be provided and a plan for further training sessions will be arranged where necessary to teach you the skills required to help you help your dog on their training journey.

Initial Consultation €95

Follow up Coaching Sessions (1 hour) €55

Please note

Training sessions are not suitable for dogs displaying problematic behaviour problems. If you aren’t sure which service is right for you, get in touch so we can ensure the service you select is appropriate for your needs.

If our training coach identifies that our dog requires behavioural assessment, you will be referred to a Behaviour Consultant & the cost of training can not be refunded.

Our behaviour consultant may, where appropriate to do so, refer clients to our training coach after initial assessment & consultation.

Reviews

Five Stars Rating

I only met Catherine in November but the difference in my dog in that short space of time has been amazing. The daily schedule provided by Snout and about has been a godsend and my dogs confidence is growing say by day. Also the time Catherine spends with us the dog owners made a huge difference as it gave me the confidence and tools to be able to understand and work with my dog. I cannot recommend them enough.5 star

“i feel seen”

“We were so lost and then so lucky to find these guys to guide us on the way to understanding and a happy and healthy life together. Suddenly but with work and patience we were having so much fun training and enjoying our walks just because we began understanding one another better. They always go beyond our expectations giving us great advice and assistance for both ends of the leash supported always with all kind of documentation, research and resources proving how much dedication and love they put in everything they do. We continue with them because we love learning, having fun and they help us becoming the best version of ourselves together.Thank to them we are now in a happy place where we never thought we were going to be.”

“so much more than expected”

We were first recommended snout & about by our doggie day care as one of our dogs was reactive to other dogs. They fitted us in really quickly. The service from start to finish was amazing! So in depth. They met with our dog and got to know her and listened to us. Our programme was made super fast and it had so much information. We have a new baby and the plan even tailored towards incorporating that aspect. It was 100% the best thing we could have done to get to know our dog better and to understand what she is going through. I would recommend them to everyone and anyone who is looking to get to know their own dog more or to improve knowledge.

“beyond expectations”

Our rescue puppy, Storm, has a lot of issues due to her previous home and it isn't an easy journey. I can honestly say that Catherine has been a life saver for us. She is compassionate, understanding and is exceptional at her job. She is highly knowledgable in the field of dog behaviour - she is worth every cent and the service she provides is genuinely priceless. Your dog will thank you for investing in becoming a better guardian with Catherine's help.

“worth every cent”

If it wasn't for Snout & About, I'm honestly not sure if we'd still be with our dog. We've seen other behaviourists before but absolutely none of them was able to listen and advise the way Snout & About did. Both Catherine and Paul have this amazing ability to make you feel seen and understood and even though you mostly work on yourself, not your dog, you never for a second feel judged or criticised. Professional, up to date with all things science and incredibly thoughtful and respectful. Honestly no words will describe this better than our anxious and reactive dog asking Paul for kisses and snuggles! We're extremely grateful for having you both lead us and help us build an amazing relationship with our doggo5 star

“start to finish amazing”

I cannot recommend Catherine enough. She is amazing with dogs and also with people . My dogs love her. Evidence-based practice presented in "easy to understand" way. We got a brilliant training program in pdf, that includes all information we need. After months of looking for a good trainer / behaviourist working in Cork area we finally found Snout&About. Catherine gave as tools and a lot of support, and all of that with so "positive reinforcing attitude" Thank you Catherine!!

“brilliant training program”

How does Behaviour Consultancy Work?

Home Icon
assessment
computer device settings

We come to your home

It's important to assess your dog in the environment whereby they're most comfortable. We assess your dog as a whole to understand why the behaviour is occurring and how we modify training practices to ensure the best possible outcome.

We set up for success & may ask to meet your dog outside on their walk before entering the home. No need to worry about payment on the day, an invoice will be issued with your program.

Then we begin the assessment

First we have a chat about your dog and their behaviour, their history & work out what’s happening & why.

We assess for their needs, their motivations, their preferences, physiological arousal and learning skills. We also assess their behaviour in relation to triggers in the home & on their walk.

We will demonstrate the required training and provide coaching to help build your technical skills as their trainer.

Understanding the roots cause of the behaviour is imperative in knowing how to form a training program based on their individual needs.

Then what?

Using an investigatory approach we devise a structured, measurable program that fits your schedule. Your needs matter too and we offer understanding and empathetic approach so you feel prepared and supported.

This program will be emailed within 72 hours of consultation and your follow up session will be booked in at this time.

This may be virtual, in home or in another environment depending on what works best.

Light Bulb

The industry is not regulated and some practices involve training methods that can make your dogs behaviour much worse and negatively impact the relationship you share with them and their welfare.

ALUMNI

The Reactivity Cult

The Group that went Global

The Alumni was initially created as a private members group for those who attended our reactivity group classes. The idea was sparked when we realised how difficult it was for our clients to continue their training programs because…… who do we ask to stand at a distance from our dogs whilst we work on our reactive pooch’s behaviour?

The Alumni has grown to include clients from Snout and About who have taken part in the consultation service and have had a coaching session in relation to working with reactivity.

This has turned into something bigger than we ever knew it would and has featured in the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants Journal and in Behaviour Education Material in Universities across Europe to inspire other trainers to do the same.

The alumni has changed so many lives, creating a wonderful community of reactive dog parents who support, sympathise and help help get one another to where they need to be.

The Alumni is currently Cork based with Kilkenny developing their own group too!

If you’re looking to join in and avail of free set ups to practice reactivity and be a part of this awesome community, email info@snoutandabout.ie

Ask Question Line Icon

F&Q’s

Ask Question Line Icon

How long before my dogs behaviour changes?

This is variable and dependent on the individual dog and their family. Training a dog is not a one stop shop or a quick fix, it takes time, dedication and commitment. We work to set you and your dog up for success and focus on small, incremental wins towards our end goals.

Ask Question Line Icon

How much TRAINING do i need to do each day?

It's not about doing more, it's about doing things differently. The most difficult part is often changing our human habits and we'll work with your daily schedule to ensure your program works for you and your needs.

Ask Question Line Icon

Does the consultation include training?

Yes, but before we can work out what we need to do in terms of training, we need to figure out what training is required. The training piece of your first consultation is designed to show you how it's done and further video links to demonstrate this training will be provided in your program. Your follow up session will focus on further improving these skills and if you feel you need more support, you can book in for follow up sessions.

Ask Question Line Icon

What if I need to cancel?

Ask Question Line Icon

Why does your qualification matter?

Life happens to us all and if you need to cancel, please give as much notice as possible and we can reschedule when you're ready. The team are all self employed so it's important we're given as much notice as possible so we can try to fill your appointment slot.

If you need to cancel a second time, a full deposit will be required prior to booking in a third time.

If a member of the team needs to cancel, we too will do everything we can to provide as much notice as possible and reschedule your appointment asap.

Sadly, our industry isn't regulated and this means anyone can call themselves a trainer or even a behaviourist. There is an overwhelming amount of bad advice out there and an overwhelming number of unqualified trainers who may use aversive and punishing tools and tactics on your pet dog. Our team have all studied applied animal behavioural sciences and complete over 32 courses every three years to ensure we're up to date on the latest advances in the behaviour and training industry. Please be mindful of "rogue trainers".
